Joseph's Receives an "A" for Patient Safety

The Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit organization committed to driving quality, safety and transparency in the US healthcare system, released their new safety grades for hospitals nationwide.

Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades, formerly known as Hospital Safety Scores, are given to more than 2,600 general acute-care hospitals across the country twice each year.

Safety ratings can help hospitals identify areas to improve, said Kristof Stremikis, director of market analysis and insight for the California Health Care Foundation, a nonprofit organization that supports improving health care in California. However, Saint Anthony Hospital said its physicians prescribe medications electronically at least 95 percent of the time, and that data was provided to Leapfrog, according to the report.

"It takes consistent, unwavering dedication to patients to achieve the highest standards of patient safety".

Three hospitals in the Midlands, however, received an "A" score. Saint Anthony contends Leapfrog's refusal to issue the hospital a higher letter grade and correct the alleged error amounts to defamation, according to the report.

- When you check into the hospital, are you aware of whether the doctors wash their hands? The UCLA medical center received above-average scores in practices meant to prevent errors, including a full score in staff hand-washing.

"We are extremely honored to be recognized as a recipient of an "A" in patient safety from Leapfrog", Grace Medical Center Chief Nursing Officer Marla Daniels said.
