MPs sworn in as New Zealand's 52nd Parliament opens for business

MPs sworn in as New Zealand's 52nd Parliament opens for business”

MPs then return to the debating chamber to begin the Debate in Reply debate.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern was among 120 MPs being sworn in at Parliament.

As Labour MP Ruth Dyson rose to nominate Trevor Mallard for the Speaker role, shadow leader of the House Simon Bridges rose to his feet for a point of order asking for clarification about whether absent MPs had a vote on the Speaker role.

The ceremony is called the Commission Opening, and gets the House in session before the State Opening tomorrow.

Mr Mallard will shortly go to Government House to be confirmed in office by Dame Patsy.

"National is the Parliament's largest party and we will ensure that counts".

"As he has said, these committees are "not rubber stamps for the executive" and passing legislation under urgency is "a lazy approach to avoid the proper scrutiny of select committees".

Traditionally - the nominated Speaker is dragged to the chair, but Trevor Mallard joked in true Speaker form that feigning reluctance would most certainly be a breach of privilege.

"In recent years we used it very sparingly because we saw what happened it you pushed too fast and too hard - you end up with legislation that doesn't work".

Mr English said National would be open to discussions with the new government about extending sitting hours at Parliament as a possible alternative.
