#NutellaGate: Twitteratis lament the new lighter and sweeter recipe of Nutella”

The Hamburg Consumer Protection centre note the firm now uses 9.7% powdered skimmed milk instead of 7.5% that was used previously.

Ferrero, who make the spread, has only admitted that is has made an "adjustment" to the product.

Yet the consumer association noted that the colour of the spread had been made lighter due to the recipe change.

The quality... and all other aspects of Nutella remain the same, the company said.

"As the colour of the new Nutella is lighter, we are working on the assumption that skimmed milk powder was added at the expense of cacao".

The recipe change, however, did not go down too well with Nutella-lovers, with many of them taking to social media to express their dismay.

Another said: Why did u change the nutella formula. how could u do this.

" Is it April 1st again?"

One angry ex-Nutella fan wrote on Twitter: If the rumors of #Nutella changing their recipe are true...

There are some things in life that just shouldn't be messed with - your morning coffee, that mandatory hangover spice bag, and above all else, that little jar of goodness that is Nutella.

The amount of sugar, which already accounted for half the product, has increased further, according to the association, rising from 55.9 to 56.3 percent.

The Independent has contacted Ferrero for content and is yet to receive a response.
