Polo GTI to go rallying again!

Polo GTI to go rallying again!”

The R5 has an obvious semblance of the new Polo GTI, but the stretched bodywork, in particular the flared arches deliver a much wider, more squat stance - as you'd expect of any rally auto. But now, Volkswagen Motorsport is expanding its involvement in customer racing by getting back on the rally scene, not as a race team but as a supplier. VW hasn't entered a factory team to run the auto in the 2018 WRC, but will be supplying the R5 to customer teams competing in various rally championships. A sketch of the new rally vehicle, based on the forthcoming sixth generation Polo GTI, previews what we can expect when the auto arrives in the second half of 2018. The experience gained from the successful WRC era is being incorporated directly: Volkswagen Motorsport Technical Director François-Xavier "FX" Demaison, father of the record winning Polo R WRC, is responsible for the development of the Polo GTI R5. And Gerard-Jan de Jongh also brings all his expertise as the senior project engineer. The Dutchman was previously Sébastien Ogier's race engineer; Ogier won the drivers' title with Volkswagen four times in a row.

Proton's Iriz R5 is expected to be available in 2018 and Toyota will develop a Yaris R5 once a suitable direct-injection engine has been developed. Built to race in WRC, the R5 will come with a 270-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder, a sequential five-speed transmission, all-wheel drive, and all the safety appointments needed to rally.

The company says this latest Polo is aimed at privateer teams and importers looking to be competitive from the moment they receive the vehicle.
