Shots fired at Greek socialist party headquarters

Shots fired at Greek socialist party headquarters”

Authorities said that there were no injuries from the shooting but there had been damage to a nearby clothes store.

The shots were fired about an hour before a televised debate among candidates to lead the broader socialist alliance.

A PASOK official said several dozen people were in the offices when the shots were fired, but nobody was injured.

Two officers in the riot police unit reported seeing a man approach them with his arm held out in front of him before firing five or six times at 7.45 p.m. According to police, the gunmen could be targeting not the party gathering but police outside of the building.

Pasok has often been the target of violent attacks in the past and its current leader Fofi Gennimata blamed the government for not taking action to prevent this.

"We have repeatedly been the target of attacks", Gennimata told Skai TV.

In a written statement, Alternate Citizens' Protection Minister Nikos Toskas said the Greek government will not "tolerate anyone placing the lives of police officers and citizens in danger".

Pasok dominated Greek politics prior to the country's financial crash but has now plummeted to become the nation's third largest party, controlling just 19 of the 300 seats in parliament.
