'Autocrat' Modi destroyed India's booming economy: Rahul Gandhi”

Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday called Prime Minister Narendra Modi a "democratically elected autocrat" as he attacked demonetisation and GST on the first anniversary of the note ban.

The Congress leader also took on the government over Goods and Service Tax (GST) saying, a hastily imposed and poorly conceptualised goods and services tax dealt another blow to our economy.

The party has also asked all its top leaders - General Secretaries and State In-charges - to travel to prominent cities and district headquarters of States and address protest rallies with a single theme Desh Bhugat Raha Hain (India Suffers) wearing black bands. Rahul Gandhi tweeted that the Note ban is a tragedy and has destroyed the lives and livelihood of millions of people. It has ruined the lives of millions of hard-working Indians.

Rahul will also hold informal meetings with industry representatives and workers during the day, sources in the Congress said.

Taking on Prime Minister Modi over his allegations of widespread corruption in Himachal, Rahul Gandhi said that as per a NITI Aayog report, corruption level was lowest in Himachal and it was also adjudged the best in the country in education, health and cleanliness.

"China's global monopoly on blue collar jobs is a fundamental challenge to other states".

However, Modi is fanning communal hatred cashing in on the anger created by joblessness and lack of economic opportunity, Gandhi said. The Opposition, as a mark of protest, observed the day as a "black day".

"Bureaucratic and complex, it has devastated livelihoods, creating a modern day "Licence Raj" that imposes rigid controls and gives vast powers to government officials", he said.

On the occasion of first anniversary of demonetisation on Wednesday, the Centre celebrated the day as an "anti-black money day". "And what is morally and ethically correct has to be politically correct", the minister said, targeting the former prime minister.
