California NAACP wants 'The Star-Spangled Banner' removed as national anthem

California NAACP wants 'The Star-Spangled Banner' removed as national anthem”

The group says the song, which has been a point of controversy in the National Football League, is "one of the most racist, pro-slavery, anti-black songs in the American lexicon", The Sacramento Bee reported Tuesday.

It has been a staple of American culture throughout the nation's history, but the NAACP in California say it needs to go.

"The Star-Spangled Banner" has been the US national anthem since 1931 after former President Herbert Hoover signed a congressional resolution making it the official song of the country.

Who Are the Outsiders and Progressives Who Upset the Odds in Elections Across the U.S.?

In her opinion, the lyrics celebrate the deaths of black American slaves fighting for freedom, and the song should be replaced with something that supports all of our values. The song was written during the War of 1812 by Francis Scott Key, a slave owner.

The state civil rights organization has been circulating two petitions in the California State Legislature, one that calls the song "one of the most racist, pro-slavery, anti-black songs in the American lexicon", and another that praises former National Football League player Colin Kaepernick for kneeling during the anthem, the Sacramento Bee reported.

The lyric in question is not part of the song that's played before sporting events, but that, of course, hasn't prevented the National Anthem from being a symbol of racial prejudice. "We're protesting this racist song that has caused so much controversy in America, and we're just trying to get it removed".

There was at least one lawmaker, though, who opposed the NAACP's request. "We love the flag", Hoffman said. Resolution supporting the protest highlighted by Colin Kaepernick and to censure the outrageous behavior of President Donald Trump III.

"And if you look at it, there's no way you can think it meant anything great for African Americans", Huffman said.
