Trump 'not invited' to Paris climate summit”

French President Emmanuel Macron plans a summit to push his "Make our Planet Great Again" agenda on December 12, the anniversary of the 2015 Paris climate accord. Syria had been the last nation, other than the US, not to be a part of the agreement.

Officially called the "One Planet Summit" in English, the event is also when Macron is going to announce the winners of his offer of a generous fellowship to US climate scientists who come to do their research in France.

At a United Nations conference on climate change, Syria said Tuesday that it will sign the agreement, according to news reports. Nuttall identified the Syrian delegate as Wadah Katmawi, the deputy minister of the ministry of local administration and environment.

According to the Syrian parliament website, a bill was passed on October 22 to ratify the Paris accord, "in accordance with the Syrian Constitution which stipulates the protection of the environment".

If emissions are reduced as spelled out in the agreement, scientists and policymakers say it will prevent a major increase in global temperatures that would raise sea levels, spark major droughts, and lead to more unsafe storms.

Calling it "Draconian" and "onerous", Trump in June said "the Paris Climate Accord is simply the latest example of Washington entering into an agreement that disadvantages the United States to the exclusive benefit of other countries, leaving American workers - who I love - and taxpayers to absorb the cost in terms of lost jobs, lower wages, shuttered factories, and vastly diminished economic production".

This development will leave the United States of America behind as the lone country with a rather antagonistic approach to the deal after Donald Trump's announced that the USA would withdraw from the agreement. Trump said it was time to "make America great again" while saying, "It is time to put Youngstown, Ohio, Detroit, Michigan, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania - along with many, many other locations within our great country - before Paris, France".

The Paris climate accord demands that signed countries limit their temperate rise to 2 degrees Celsius.

"This means Trump is in splendid isolation".

Paula Caballero, director for climate change at the World Resources Institute, said: "With Syria on board, now the entire world is resolutely committed to advancing climate action - all save one country".

The Trump administration will not be able to formally extricate the US from the climate agreement until 2020.

Signed in Paris in December 2015, the treaty entered into force on November 4, 2016. Following the entry into force of the historic agreement past year, elaborating its implementing guidelines is now a key focus. It then takes one year to fully withdraw.

The United States is the planet's second largest emitter of CO2.

"When even Syria - with all its problems - can see the sense of a global climate agreement, it really shows how ideologically wedded to climate denialism the U.S. Republican Party has become", said Mohamed Adow of International Climate Lead for Christian Aid.
