Couple accused of fabricating home invasion

Couple accused of fabricating home invasion”

Pelton told deputies the two men, pointed a gun at her, then asked her where Javier was.

Officials believed the couple shot themselves as part of a scam to gain money in a settlement from the property management company who manages their home.

Lindsey Pelton, 36, and 35-year-old Doug Teixeira initially claimed that two men broke into their Deltona home on October 26, but investigators from the Volusia County Sheriff's Office soon poked multiple holes in their story.

Almost two weeks later, however, the police were no longer looking for the phantom masked attackers, they were arresting the couple for providing false information to law enforcement, a misdemeanor charge.

"They shot themselves for the goal of committing insurance fraud", Volusia County Mike Sheriff Chitwood said on November 7, announcing the arrests.

The couple was arrested Tuesday on charges of reporting a false crime.

Police determined that no one broke into the home, Chitwood told the newspaper, and found it odd that the residence was filled with dried blood and the smell of bleach. After a brief exchange with the suspects, the husband was shot in the leg and the wife was shot in the arm.

Police say the couple even had a lawyer for insurance proceedings, the Daytona Beach News-Journal reported.

The victims were transported to Central Florida Regional Hospital by ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers arrived to find the married couple had suffered gunshot wounds and were claiming that $7,000 was taken from a safe.

Pelton's father, Carson Tyler, called investigators to find out more information about the alleged robbery and said that the couple didn't have money to rob.

"The crime scene appeared staged", said the November 7 report posted on Facebook.

Chitwood said Pelton shot herself in the lower left forearm and fractured the bone and Teixeira had a bullet enter the rear of his left calf and exit the front of the calf, reports state.

Surveillance footage revealed no signs of vehicles stopping near the house, other than a school bus.
