Intel To Develop Its Own Graphics Chips Led By Former AMD Exec

Intel To Develop Its Own Graphics Chips Led By Former AMD Exec”

Raja M. Koduri will join Intel in December as chief architect, senior vice president of the newly formed Core and Visual Computing Group, and as general manager of a new initiative to drive edge computing solutions.

Only time will tell how the addition of Koduri will help Intel in the GPU business, where the company is miles behind giants like Nvidia and AMD. "He also leads differentiated IP across computing, graphics, media, imaging and machine intelligence capabilities for the client and data centre segments, artificial intelligence, and emerging opportunities like edge computing".

Nevertheless, Intel faces a long road from the graphics blocks it now puts on its PC processors to a full portfolio from high-end discrete to embedded GPU parts. With AMD essentially spinning the Radeon Technologies Group into its own entity, Intel now leveraging AMD graphics technology, and a top-level executive like Koduri responsible for said graphics tech switching teams, we have to wonder how the relationship between Intel and AMD's RTG with evolve.

As if that wasn't freaky enough, this hardware news follows an announcement earlier in the week that Intel will be teaming up with AMD (using a Polaris spin-off chip, specifically) to take on Nvidia in the laptop market. That part of the job will be in direct competition with AMD and Nvidia. But if they've already been working on this stuff internally, a discrete Intel GPU could be much closer. "We have exciting plans to aggressively expand our computing and graphics capabilities and build on our very strong and broad differentiated IP foundation". Before that he was one of the top graphics developers at AMD and ATI Technologies, which AMD acquired in 2006.

Koduri has over 25 years of experience in developing graphics processors and accelerated computing over a broad range of devices including gaming consoles, PCs, smartphones, and workstations. Raja Koduri has indeed left AMD-and he has indeed joined Intel. Prior to AMD, Koduri served as director of graphics architecture at Apple Inc., where he helped establish a leadership graphics sub-system for the Mac product family and led the transition to Retina computer displays.
