International Olympic Committee suspends Frank Fredericks over French corruption charges”

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has suspended Frankie Fredericks as a member, after the Namibian former 100m and 200m star was charged in France on suspicion of corruption in the vote for the 2016 Olympic host city.

The IOC said its executive board had made a decision to suspend Fredericks after "considering the gravity and urgency of the situation and its impact on the reputation of the IOC".

The IOC leadership intervened eight months after the four-time Olympic sprint medallist from Namibia stepped back from his duties when the allegations were reported in French media.

Namibian Fredericks, who was a member of the IAAF council and a prominent figure within the International Olympic Committee, claims the money was legitimate payment for consultancy and promotional work for athletics' governing body.

Before sending money to Yemi Limited (Fredericks), Diack received $1.5 to $2 million from Brazilian parties interested in bringing the Olympic Games to Rio, a prospect that came with unprecedented business opportunities.

Fredericks is suspected of receiving bribes and laundering the money through Paris, a source close to the inquiry in France said on Friday. Fredericks, meanwhile, claimed the payment was related to his role in promoting several athletics events.

The statement, in part, reads: 'The IOC Ethics Commission stressed that considering the current status of the file, it is not in a position to make a recommendation on the value of the facts.

Fredericks has rejected allegations of corruption.

He also was provisionally suspended by the IAAF, where he was a member of its ruling committee and on a task force overseeing Russia's attempt to lift an worldwide ban from the sport because of a doping scandal.

The IOC suspended him on Tuesday citing "the impact on the IOC's reputation".

He was provisionally suspended from the IAAF in July when the organisation's Athletic Integrity Unit opened an investigation into the matter.
