Iran urges friendship instead of hostilities in ties with Saudi Arabia

Iran urges friendship instead of hostilities in ties with Saudi Arabiaā€¯

Mainly Shi'ite Iran and predominantly Sunni Saudi Arabia are on opposing sides of several conflicts in the region, including in Syria and Yemen.

Saudi Arabia's powerful crown prince had accused Iran of supplying missiles to the Huthis, which he said "could be considered as an act of war".

"You are well aware of the power and status of the Islamic Republic of Iran".

Speaking after the closed-doors meeting, Sir Mark said there also has to be immediate access to all ports, especially for food, fuel, medicine and other essential supplies.

The move, which follows the interception of a missile fired toward the Saudi capital Riyadh on Saturday, is likely to worsen a humanitarian crisis in Yemen that according to the United Nations has pushed some seven million people to the brink of starvation and left almost 900,000 infected with cholera.

In his November 8 comments, Rohani also dismissed meddling accusations and said that "brotherhood, friendship, and support" were the only way forward in the region.

On Saturday, a ballistic missile was intercepted near the Saudi capital.

"I think that as long as Saudi Arabia is attempting to prosecute a long war in Yemen and appease its population's demand for a piece of the profits, it will sell as much oil as it can sell", she said.

On Monday, in response to the weekend missile attack on Riyadh by Houthi rebels, Saudi Arabia chose to close all of Yemen's air and seaports, stunting humanitarian relief operations in the country.

"By providing these types of weapons to the Huthi militias in Yemen, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps is violating two United Nations resolutions simultaneously", Haley said.

"These missile systems were not present in Yemen before the conflict, and we call upon the United Nations to conduct a thorough examination of evidence that the Iranian regime is perpetuating the war in Yemen to advance its regional ambitions", the statement added.

Saturday's attack showed that despite a more than two-year Saudi-led bombing campaign and blockade, the Huthis retain missiles capable of striking targets deep inside the kingdom.

"You... constantly bomb the Yemenis... but when for once they fire back, you say it's unjust".

"How should the Yemeni people react to the bombardment of their country?"

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Tuesday dismissed the accusations of Iran's direct aggression made by Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman as "false and risky".

"There's no crisis that diplomacy can't resolve".

The stance is a sharp break from the Obama administration's policy on Iran, which provided Iran with $1.7 billion in 2015 in exchange for the Islamist regime agreeing to delay its nuclear weapons development until 2026.

Iran denies arming the Houthi movement, which has fought a Saudi-led coalition backing Yemen's government since 2015.
