Nova Scotia university football game cancelled over SMU 'eligibility issues'”

The 2017 AUS championship game between the Acadia Axemen and the Saint Mary's Huskies will not be played this season due to an eligibility issue, Atlantic University Sport announced on Thursday.

Currie said there are some legal proceedings preventing U Sports from making a decision, and there's no guarantee it will come in time for the game, which was scheduled to be played Saturday. "Without that certainty, there can not be the equal playing field essential to the value system of the AUS as set out in its Mission Statement and Constitutional Objectives".

Currie said the game will not be rescheduled and the Acadia Axemen will advance to represent the AUS in the national semifinal game.

"We are disappointed a final resolution to this situation could not be reached in time", said AUS executive director Phil Currie in the release.

"We don't have a decision, there's so much uncertainty we feel it's necessary to take some action".

According to media reports, the player is Archelaus Jack, a SMU wide receiver.

Jack was listed on the practice roster for the Saskatchewan Roughriders a year ago.

The issue relates to the CFL rule which dictates that any former CFL player, or a player who remains on a CFL team's practice roster after August 15, has to wait 365 days before playing for a Canadian university team. Otherwise, they can't play for 365 days.

The eligibility issue relates to Huskies wide receiver Archelaus Jack, who was released from the practice squad of the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League on October 11.

Instead, the Axemen will host the Ontario conference champion on November 18 in the Uteck Bowl with the victor to advance to the Vanier Cup.
