Pain doctor faces more charges connected to patient deaths

Pain doctor faces more charges connected to patient deaths”

A northtowns doctor, facing charges of illegally prescribing pain pills, now faces additional federal charges.

The indictment charges 56-year-old Dr. Eugene Gosy, of Williamsville, near Buffalo, with causing the deaths of six people by prescribing painkillers, namely fentanyl, oxycodone and tapentadol, other than for a legitimate medical goal.

The U.S. Attorney's office in Buffalo says Wednesday that Dr. Eugene Gosy (GOH-see) of Clarence was responsible for the mass distribution of prescription painkillers including fentanyl and oxycodone. "He's a compassionate guy", defense attorney Joel L. Daniels said.

"We need to stop the abuse of prescription drugs, and one way to do that is stop those doctors who prescribe these killer drugs outside the usual course of their medical practice and not for a legitimate medical objective", Acting U.S. Attorney James P. Kennedy said in announcing the new charges.

Conviction on the charges connected to patient deaths could bring a maximum sentence of life in prison.

Gosy's defense lawyer acknowledged the victims were his client's patients, but said their drug abuse can not be blamed on the doctor who was trying to help them.

"I know one thing that tipped us off and sort of got everyone's attention right out of the box was the fact that Dr. Gosy's practice wrote more prescriptions for controlled substances than any other provider, including hospitals, in the state of NY", said Kennedy.

He allegedly signed blank prescriptions that others filled out while he was out of town, and patients were allowed to call in for refills processed by staff who weren't properly trained or certified, prosecutors charged.

Gosy also submitted workers' compensation claims for treatment provided by underlings while he was traveling to such far-flung locations as Moscow, Honolulu, Athens and the Dominican Republic, NBC News reported.

The head of the NY division of the Drug Enforcement Administration likened Gosy's pain management clinic to a "modern-day version of 19th century Opium dens".

The 166-count indictment claims Gosy, when faced with warning signs of abuse or addiction in his patients, ignored those signs and instead prescribed more drugs. He is the only one named in the indictment.

"Dr. Gosy is truly my hero. He keeps me mobile", said Johnson, who has been a patient since she was in a vehicle accident 15 years ago.
