Topshop makes changing rooms gender neutral following customer complaints

Topshop makes changing rooms gender neutral following customer complaints”

Two store assistants help a shopper in Topshop's flagship NY store.

Topshop is not the first fashion retailer to be condemned for its "transphobic" changing rooms policies, with Urban Outfitters having previously come under fire for similar practices.

The move comes after London-based performance artist and writer Travis Alabanza complained to the high street brand via that they had "just experienced transphobia" in a Manchester branch after being denied entry to one of their changing rooms.

Would you be happy to use a gender neutral changing room at Topshop?

Topshop has abolished gender-specific changing rooms from its stores after a number of customer complaints branded the practice as "dated and unsafe".

Travis - who has been shopping in a Topshop in Manchester - was allegedly told by staff to use the male changing rooms downstairs instead.

However not everyone was impressed with the move, with one person tweeting: "Can't believe @Topshop have changed their changing room policy".

Travis recalled the incident in more detail to Buzzfeed recalling: "She [staff member] wasn't rude, but she wasn't sympathetic either".

"Though typically located in specific product areas such as Topshop or Topman, our fitting rooms are now available for all customers to use".

'This has been communicated across the chain'.

However, a Topshop spokesperson has since told told Cosmopolitan UK: "All TOPSHOP TOPMAN customers are free to use any of the fitting rooms located within our stores".

However, not everyone agreed with the change of policy with one raising concerns that it could make Topshop's target market - teenage girls - feel uncomfortable.
