Vaccination warning is issued by health boss”

The flu is a seasonal respiratory illness can be caused by influenza A or B viruses. Vaccinating them is one of the best ways to protect them and the wider community against flu. In some cases, infection can be severe and can cause complications, including death. Serious outcomes of flu infection can result in hospitalization or even death.

With the coming influenza season potentially being more severe for seniors and those with weaker immune systems than in previous years, health officials are encouraging more people to vaccinate themselves with a flu shot this fall. People who have had an allergic reaction to the flu shot should not have the vaccine. "Children can be super spreaders so getting them vaccinated not only protects them but also those around them".

The health unit is once again urging people to get the flu vaccine, which is free for people who work, live, or study in Ontario.

According to the BC Centre for Disease Control, the risk of catching the flu or spreading it to others can be reduced by hand-washing, eating well, regular exercise and having the influenza vaccine administered. These tiny droplets can land in the mouths or noses of those nearby. However, the vaccine is made from inactive, or dead, viruses so you can not get the flu from the vaccine.

The CDC also argues that you do not have to be sick in order to pass along the virus. "Seniors have been accustomed to going to get their shots, so they just come to our centre now".

Brianna DeMelo, a junior media communications major at PLNU, recounted her experience with the influenza virus a year ago.

This year, the flu could hit local residents especially hard, too.

"I was hospitalized for two days, but recovering from this virus took a lot longer", said DeMelo. The flu has made an early start this year and Wisconsin has already had 19 cases. "Vaccinations are very beneficial for preventing this illness and it only takes a few minutes".
