Video Game Voice Acting Union Approves New Deal, Ends Yearlong Strike

Video Game Voice Acting Union Approves New Deal, Ends Yearlong Strike”

The videogame voice actors strike that began more than a year ago is finally over.

Almost a year after voting to strike against 11 major video game publishers, voice actors in the SAG-AFTRA union voted overwhelmingly to approve a tentative agreement that will get them back to work for at least the next three years.

Under the terms of the new agreement, developers and publishers will provide additional payments to performers based on how many sessions were worked, and those payments must arrive no later than the game's release date.

The approved agreement ends the longest acting strike in U.S. history, according to Deadline, which focused on 11 major publishers, including Activision, Disney, Electronic Arts, Take Two, and Warner Bros.

The agreement also addresses the issue of vocal stress on the voice performers, and rejects certain provisions that management sought out, including fines for voice actors who are "late or distracted at session".

The agreement becomes effective November 8, 2017 and expires November 7, 2020. These bonus payments begin with an extra $75 for the first session and can add up to $2,100 after the completion of 10 sessions.

One of the other big issues SAG members found with their work in the game industry was a lack of transparency about what game they were working on, what their role was and, sometimes, some of the questionable activities they'd have to act out. The deal includes significant improvements in the area of transparency and the payment structure ensures that our members are compensated fairly for their work.

The biggest win for the actors is the implementation of new "transparency provisions" which strictly outline actor's job details before they hit the voice-recording booth.

Game makers must also reveal in advance whether the performance will require the use of "unusual terminology, profanity or racial slurs", feature sexual or violent content, or require the performance of stunts. "I am excited for what this means for our members moving forward", said SAG-AFTRA president Gabrielle Carteris.
