VW blames drivers failing to fit new software for dirty diesel cars

VW blames drivers failing to fit new software for dirty diesel cars”

According to Mary Creagh, chair of the Commons' Environmental Audit Committee, the rate at which vehicles are being dealt with has "stalled".

Around two-thirds of the vehicles affected by VW's use of "defeat devices" have undergone technical fixes to date.

The issue affects engines manufactured under VW Group brands including Audi, SEAT, Skoda and Volkswagen Passenger and Commercial vehicles (see airqualitynews.com story).

About 6.25 million of roughly 10.5 million affected diesel cars globally have been refitted, with a great share in Europe, a representative at VW's Wolfsburg headquarters informed on Monday, and that about 90 percent of about 2.5 million impacted cars in the automaker's German house market have been repaired.

In response to the comments, VW has claimed that a drop-off in the number of vehicles fixed had been anticipated, and added that reaching a 100% fix-rate for its vehicles was "unlikely".

However, the manufacturer has hit back at the claims, highlighting the fact that the campaign was voluntary, rather than a safety recall.

"We are committed to apply the technical measure to as many vehicles as possible but it should be recognised that some vehicles will have been scrapped or stolen, some written off, some exported and some owners may decline or never respond".

VW had earlier undertaken to fix, each vehicle within the group fitted with software created to cheat emissions testing by producing lower readings in lab conditions by autumn.

It promised to fit new software that would reduce their emissions but admitted last night that nearly a third of the vehicles had still not been fixed.

When the Department for Transport revealed the VW Dieselgate "Fix" would be voluntary in the United Kingdom, we questioned why, if that is the case, would anyone actually have it done?

In her letter to the Transport Minister, Mary Creagh said: "It is essential that the vehicles on Britain's roads adhere to emissions regulations, particularly as the country is faced with unsafe levels of pollution".

A DfT spokeswoman said, "The UK Government continues to take the unacceptable actions of Volkswagen extremely seriously and is working hard on behalf of UK consumers".
