Apple leadership is more than 80% white and male

"It's plural." Under CEO Tim Cook, Apple has made a big push to increase the diversity of its work force and executive team. "Nobody out." The report is the first since the role of vice president of Inclusion and Diversity was created for former HR head Denise Young Smith.

Apple continued to hire greater numbers of Asian, black and Latino workers over the past year, but the overall racial and gender breakdown of the company's workforce remains mostly unchanged since 2016. Some 29% percent of its leaders are women, up one percentage point from July 2016 to July 2017, the company said. Apple has raised that proportion just one percentage point since 2014, and the increase just happened in the a year ago.

In sharing its new figures, Apple debuted a new diversity portal that emphasized many of its hires over the past year - 27 percent - identify as underrepresented minorities.

"In 2017, we dedicated a portion of the proceeds from our Pride Edition Apple Watch band to help support the work of GLSEN, PFLAG, The Trevor Project, and ILGA". Traditionally, the workers in its retail stores have been much more diverse than those in its leadership ranks or among its tech employees.

Black employees still make up 9 percent of Apple's workforce, compared to roughly 12 percent of the total US population. Still, it's been hard for Apple and its peers to show significant percentage increases in diversifying its employee base.

The video-which showcases a portrait of the company-provides a glimpse of "68 employees revealing who we are" and "what we believe", in the two-minute clip. The number of female employees under the age of 30 has increased 5 percentage points over the past three years to 36 percent. "I get a little bit frustrated when diversity or the term diversity is tagged to the people of color, or the women, or the LGBT".

In fact, black and Hispanic representation is declining in San Francisco Bay Area technology companies, according to research published last month by the non-profit Ascend Foundation, which advocates for Asians in business. The group made up 23 percent of Apple's leadership in 2017, compared to 21 percent in 2016.

Apple also said that it's been actively hiring more employees from "historically underrepresented groups in tech - women, black, Hispanic, Native American, and Native Hawaiian & other Pacific Islander".
