Federal High Court voids Senator Ndume's suspension”

The suspension of former Leader of the Senate, Ali Ndume, was on Friday voided by the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Ndume, who represents Borno South Senatorial District, was suspended in March.

Ndume was indicted "for bringing Senator Dino Melaye, his colleague, and the institution of the Senate to unbearable disrepute".

This was the recommendation of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions that investigated the matter before bringing it before plenary for consideration, Sun reports.

Ndume, not satisfied by the reason given for his suspension, headed to court to challenge the action of the senate.

The report, which was presented by the committee's chairman, Sen.

Justice Quadri specifically ordered the Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, and the Senate to ensure prompt payment of Ndume's outstanding salaries and allowances.

"The suspension of the plaintiff (Ndume) is hereby declared illegal, unlawful and unconstitutional".

It wasn't all smiles for Ndume, however, as the judge refused to grant the N500 million damages he asked in his suit.

Consequently, he did not make any order as to cost.

Quadri described the suspension as an exhibition of lawlessness on the part of the senate.

"An order directing the 1st and 2nd defendants to pay to the plaintiff his outstanding salaries and allowances (howsoever called) forthwith". He also noted that the maximum duration during which a lawmaker could be suspended is 14 days.

Ndume's fallout with the senate began when he urged the Upper legislative chambers to investigate the allegation that the red chamber was pllanning vengeance on the Comptroller-General of Customs, Hameed Ali, because a bullet-proof auto allegedly belonging to Saraki was seized by customs.
