First Pirlo, now this?! Xavi to retire in the summer”

Barcelona legend Xavi Hernandez has revealed he will retire from playing professional football at the end of the season and plans to go into coaching.

Xavi, who has featured in nearly 800 club matches for Barca and Al Sadd, admitted that games were now taking their toll on his 37-year-old body, and that he hoped to start his coaching badges as soon as he ends his illustrious career on the pitch.

Xavi, who won 133 caps for Spain during a 14-year global career that saw him lift the World Cup in 2010 and the European Championships in 2008 and 2012, said his spell in the Middle East has helped him wind down. "I have enjoyed a lot of luck in my career by avoiding injury but after many wonderful years I believe it is now coming to an end". Now I see myself being more exhausted, it's harder to recover, it will surely be my previous year of being a footballer. He has won 31 trophies as a player.

The 37-year-old was a mainstay for both Spain and Barcelona during an incredibly successful spell that included eight La Liga titles, four Champions League wins, a World Cup and two European Championships.

Xavi had two goals and nine assists in 21 appearances for Barcelona during his final season at Camp Nou.
