Hope Solo accuses ex-FIFA boss Sepp Blatter of sexual assault”

Sepp Blatter's list of wrongdoings is lengthy, and now the disgraced former Federation Internationale de Football Association president is accused of sexual assault.

Solo says the incident happened just before they went on stage together and has recently spoken out about sexual harassment in general in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal. "Can-I-talk-about-that-" target="_blank">Portugese newspaper Expresso that Blatter "grabbed my ass" just moments before appearing on stage together at an awards show in January 2013. Blatter has denied the allegations. That needs to change. I've seen it with trainers, doctors and our press officers. "Yes, everybody has [the right to make] their individual decisions, and it is uncomfortable, but I wish more women, especially in football, would speak against it, about their experiences, because some of those people still work there and some of the players still act [like that]". I've seen it amongst players in the locker room.

Solo said she never saw Blatter again after the ceremony and was disappointed not to be able to "tell him directly, 'Don't ever touch me!'" The 81-year-old resigned in 2015 and was subsequently banned for ethics breaches.

In 2004, Blatter said the women's game could attract more viewers if they wore "tighter shorts" like volleyball players. In 2013, he called a female candidate for Fifa's executive committee "good, and good looking".

Solo, who won the 2015 World Cup with the USA, has been sidelined by an injury and has not played for the national team since a six-month suspension for criticizing opponents Sweden at the Olympics in 2016. She was banned after accusing the Swedish team of a defensive performance and referring to them as "a bunch of cowards" after they beat United States of America in the quarter-finals, a comment she later retracted and apologised for.

Solo posted on Instagram last month a message to women participating in the #MeToo hashtag and speaking out against sexual assault.
