In the constellation of the Great bear found the star-zombies”

The scientists also noted that in the area where was discovered the star of zombie, astronomers were able to find traces of a supernova explosion which occurred about sixty years ago, but to destroy it and failed.

Astronomers within the constellation URSA major managed to find a unusual star, the survivors after the first explosion, a supernova, which then exploded a second time after a fifty-year hiatus. Several months later, astronomers at Las Cumbres Observatory in the USA noticed the supernova was growing brighter again after it had faded.

"For now, the supernova offers astronomers their greatest thrill: something they do not understand".

Usually, a supernova fades within 100 days but the "zombie" star has been going strong for more than 1,000 days.

The finding was published Wednesday in the journal Nature.

Astrophysicist Iair Arcavi, who led the study, called the discovery "very surprising" and "very exciting". "We thought we've seen everything there is to see in supernovae after seeing so many of them, but you always get surprised by the universe". The existence of a few survivors of the supernova explosion of a space object, the specialists of the University of California in Santa Barbara first learned in 2014, initially mistaking him for a young star. "It's the biggest puzzle I've encountered in nearly a decade of studying stellar explosions".

One possibility is that this star was so massive, and its core so hot, that an explosion blew away the outer layers and left the center intact enough to repeat the entire process. The explosions of stars, known as supernovae, have been observed in the thousands and in all cases they marked the death of a star.

"We could actually have missed plenty of them because it kind of masquerades as a normal supernova if you only look at it once", Arcavi said.

It's the star that won't die, even though it has exploded and appeared to go down in a blaze of glory multiple times.
