Kenya: Raila Odinga Seeks US Help to End Political Impasse”

"The regime wants to hold on to power... let me be blunt, Kenya is hurtling towards an outright dictatorship, the Jubilee government has looted every institution in order to achieve goal of long-term control of the state to at least 2032". He said unless that problem is addressed, it could tear the country apart.

According to Ruto who has already shared his intentions to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta when his second term comes to completion, said Raila is working overtime to curtail his ambitions by seeking help from overseas.

Two petitions were filed Monday in Kenya's Supreme Court challenging President Uhuru Kenyatta's re-election last month in a repeat vote that the main opposition group boycotted.

Odinga had argued that the mistakes that brought about the annulment of the Aug. 8 vote was most likely to be repeated because reforms have not been taken at the electoral body, including the resignations of staffers who bungled the August general elections.

Former lawmaker Harun Mwau filed a petition against the electoral commission, known as the IEBC, as well as its chairman and President Kenyatta.

Mr Odinga withdrew from the October 26 fresh presidential election, protesting lack of electoral reforms and demanded a new poll 90 days after fresh nominations. Kenyatta won with 98 percent of the vote.

"We are also seeking to demonstrate they committed illegalities and irregularities that would serve to invalidate it as well and that the commission was so partial it wasn't able to run an election", Ndubi said. "When [the] Supreme Court made a ruling, and stated there were irregularities, because the procedures were not followed, and the Supreme Court was very categorical that elections is not an event, it's a process".

The center which sent a core team of experts in Kenya since April, monitoring key parts of the electoral process, including voter registration, campaigning, electoral preparations, and the recent resolution of disputes in the courts, promised to release a comprehensive statement on the overall election process after its completion in early 2018. "So it compelled us to go to court because we felt this election was not going to be free and fair". "After the bodyguard of the Supreme Court's Deputy Chief Justice was shot, the other judges did not feel safe and their request for enhanced security was declined".

Some activists fear the petitions are coming amid an effort to intimidate the Supreme Court, citing the October 24 shooting of the police driver for one of the justices. If the election results are upheld, Kenyatta will be inaugurated for a second term November 28.
