Lupita Nyong'o Calls Out a Magazine for Photoshopping Her Natural Hair

Lupita Nyong'o Calls Out a Magazine for Photoshopping Her Natural Hair”

She wakes up and finds her photo on the cover of Grazia magazine had been edited to fit their notion of what lovely hair looks like.

In a statement issued in response to the post, Grazia "apologised unreservedly" to Nyong'o, saying it is "committed to representing diversity throughout its pages".

Along with the images, Nyong'o wrote a lengthy message, explaining that she now "embraces her natural heritage" after years of aspiring to "light skin and straight, silky hair" rather than her own "dark skin and kinky, coily hair".

She said "Being featured on the cover of a magazine fulfils me as it is an opportunity to show other dark, kinky-haired people, and particularly our children, that they are lovely just the way they are".

Lupita had an interview with Grazia magazine where she was featured on its cover.

Nyong'o said in a post on Instagram that she embraced her "natural heritage" when it came to her appearance and had not been consulted on the apparent changes.

But the 34-year-old actor has expressed her dismay at photographs of herself on the cover of the U.K's Grazia magazine, accusing the magazine of editing and smoothing her hair out to "fit a more Eurocentric notion of what handsome hair looks like". She was born in Mexico to Kenyan parents and grew up in Kenya.

In her Oscar speech back in 2014, she said "When I look down at this golden statue, may it remind me and every little child, that no matter where you're from, your dreams are valid".

Last month, Solange expressed similar disappointment after the ES Magazine edited out her hair on their cover.

The Oscar-winning actress claims Grazia UK "edited out and smoothed my hair to fit their notion of what handsome hair looks like" in a lengthy post on Instagram, before adding that she was "disappointed" with the end result.

She wrote on Instagram "dtmh".

'It is therefore a matter of great regret that the finished cover artwork caused concern and offence. It added: "The decision to amend the photograph was taken for layout purposes, but plainly we made the wrong call and we have offered our unreserved apologies to Solange".

Metro.co.uk has contacted Grazia for comment.
