MSHA Equipment Alert: Kidde fire extinguishers

Potentially affecting 40.5 million units in the United States and Canada, the Kidde fire extinguisher recall has repercussions in Wrangell, too, with one at the Sentinel office among those to be returned. The nozzle can also detach with enough force to pose an impact hazard. Effective Nov. 2, 2017, Kidde recalling 134 models of its plastic-handled fire extinguishers manufactured between 1973 and today. The extinguishers were sold in red, white and silver, and are either ABC- or BC-rated.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) issued an Equipment Alert for Kidde fire extinguishers. The CPSC recall website shows how to easily identify the affected extinguishers.

For the push-button Pindicator fire extinguishers, the recall includes eight models manufactured between August 11, 1995 and September 22. "This may require a slightly different mounting orientation or location", said BoatUS Foundation Assistant Director of Boating Safety Ted Sensenbrenner". There have also been about 391 reports of failed or limited activation of nozzle detachment. The company offers additional recall information online at by selecting "Product Safety Recall".
