Mutilated koala found in regional Victoria

The koala was found dead with both its ears cut off on Hopkins Point Rd, near Warrnambool, about 8.30am on Monday.

It is not clear if the animal was dead or alive when its ears were removed.

A KOALA has been horrendously mutilated near Warrnambool in Victoria's southwest as police investigate a spate of other native animal killings.

Police will now try to get to the bottom of this particular case of horrific animal cruelty. No further details were given.

It comes just months after Victorian authorities found a dead kangaroo on a roadside in Melbourne's outer north-east.

Investigators believe the mutilation happened recently and are searching for any cars or people seen near the scene around that time.

A 2012 national count placed total koala numbers at 330,000, though their tree-top habitat makes accurate assessment hard.
