Nutella Secretly Changed Its Recipe And People Are Going Nuts

Nutella Secretly Changed Its Recipe And People Are Going Nuts”

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I'm not sure exactly what that statement means, but I do know that a recent change in Nutella's formula - a "fine-tuning" as the company is calling it - is not bringing happiness to numerous world's Nutella lovers. As long as the delicious spread is suitably chocolate-y and hazelnut-y, how bad can it be? It's ideal. It's delicious. Powdered skim milk now makes up 8.7 percent of the spread, compared to the previous proportion of 7.5 percent, the sugar content has increased from 55.9 percent to 56.3 percent, and the fat content has decreased from 31.8 percent to 30.9 percent. In my opinion, Nutella should be thought of as candy, not as a breakfast ingredient to regularly spread on toast and waffles or slathered on fresh fruit like the company's commercials suggest. Owing to more skimmed milk powder and less cocoa, the colour is slightly lighter.

The result of the change is pretty much a sweeter version of the Nutella we all know and love, with a lighter shade of brown.

Ferrero has stridently denied the claims in a press release this week, explaining "all the precise details concerning the minor adjustments to the Nutella recipe in France" and the rest of the world, assuring consumers that there still remains "only one unique Nutella recipe".

In a statement, Ferrero confirmed that it did "fine-tune" the the recipe but assured customers that they should notice no difference in the taste or quality of the product. Don't fix what's not broken. Earlier this month, German consumer watchdog group slash defender of all things chocolate, Verbraucherzentrale Hamburg, discovered that Nutella's parent company, Italian chocolate producer Ferrero, had silently altered the spread's recipe-and not for the better, chocoholics say.
