NYC Subway Bans 'Ladies and Gentlemen'

NYC Subway Bans 'Ladies and Gentlemen'”

In lieu of "ladies and gentlemen", the agency will be moving to gender-neutral phrasing like "passengers", "riders" and "everyone".

A bulletin was sent out six days ago to all NYC Transit staff telling them to immediately replace that salutation in their announcements with a list of acceptable words like passengers, riders or everyone.

The New York Post said the move is "taking political correctness to ridiculous heights".

"Please don't use any greeting other than these", a memo circulated to MTA employees stated. It also directed conductors on newer subway trains that have automated announcements not to use the prerecorded messages until they can be changed out to match the new order, the Post reported. Line managers and train service supervisors will reportedly be monitoring MTA staffers to ensure they don't slip up and accidentally refer to men and women as "ladies and gentlemen".

"We're fundamentally changing the way we talk with riders to give them better and clearer information", said MTA spokesman Jon Weinstein.

"They are trying to be politically correct", said station worker and Transport Workers Union Local 100 member Anthony Staley. "They don't want to offend anyone".

Considering recent reports that show that almost three-quarters of New York Subway lines run chronically behind schedule and the tunnels are infested with rats that can move and devour a large slice of Famous Ray's pizza, you'd think the use of gender neutral announcements might fall a little lower on the list of priorities for MTA.
