In fact, millions of usernames and passwords are exposed by hacking, with billions more stolen through data breaches, much like the Equifax hack in September.

Focusing exclusively on Google accounts and in partnership with the University of California, Berkeley, researchers created an automated system to scan public websites and criminal forums for stolen credentials. Two of them are phishing and keylogging.

"By ranking the relative risk to users, we found that phishing posed the greatest threat, followed by keyloggers, and finally third-party breaches", said Google. Whereas keylogging is a direct attack that records users when they're typing.

One Million Account Logins and Passwords are Stolen Every Month, According to Google. Many people (including employees) continue to reuse usernames and passwords across many sites. Is it time for employer policies that prohibit the employee's use of off-duty passwords for corporate email accounts, and likewise, the use of workplace emails as secondary verification for personal accounts?

"The news of ongoing, massive-scale theft of Gmail credentials should be a wake-up call that it's time to fundamentally re-think authentication, and incorporate continuous validation techniques data that can't be mimicked, such as passive biometrics".

Throughout the research, Google's sources helped it identify 788,000 credentials stolen through keyloggers, and 12 million obtained through phishing. Moreover, the company is also working hard to make its services more secure.

Google recommends protecting yourself by visiting its Security Checkup page and allowing Chrome to automatically generate passwords for your accounts and save them via Smart Lock.

"While we have already applied these insights to our existing protections, our findings are yet another reminder that we must continuously evolve our defenses in order to stay ahead of these bad actors and keep users safe" the Google Security Blog states.
