Patrice Evra: Marseille defender banned from Uefa club matches for seven months”

Patrice Evra has been sacked by Marseille and handed a season-long ban by UEFA from the federation's club competitions after kicking a club fan during a touchline fracas.

Evra was widely condemned for the assault on a Marseille spectator which took place during the pre-match warm-up of a Europa League tie at Portuguese side Vitoria Guimaraes last week.

The Ligue 1 club initially suspended the 36-year-old from duty as UEFA investigated the incident to deem what further punishment was merited on top of a one-match ban.

The player has also received a fine of €10,000 for his actions.

Veteran France left-back Evra was red carded before kick-off following an altercation with a group of travelling Marseille supporters.

Evra was carried back over the hoardings by a team-mate before aiming a kick at the head of one of the Marseille followers. Both parties agreed and chose to discontinue their collaboration by mutual agreement.

While the player's contract was not terminated straight away, his suspension meant he would not be paid and would have to stay away from the club. They also again criticised the attitude of the supporters whose provocation led to the player's reaction.

Jacques-Henri Eyraud, the Marseille club president, added: "Today there is sadness", he said.

Marseille were also hit with a €25,000 fine and then "ordered to contact Vitoria SC within 30 days for the settlement of the damages caused by its supporters". "For Marseille fans, too, who are stigmatized by the irresponsible behaviour from a handful of them". For the club finally, whose reputation is tainted. "Despite this incident, we are more than ever determined to demonstrate on and off the field that we are driven by the highest individual and collective demands".
