Plans for UK's biggest solar farm in Kent

Plans for UK's biggest solar farm in Kent”

A solar power plant that would be the UK's biggest is being planned for Kent.

The two developers say that the project could be built without any subsidies. The BBC reports that conservation group CPRE Kent describes the proposed farm as "the worst possible location", being both right next to a waterfowl nature reserve, and located right on the picturesque Kent coast.

It could generate enough electricity to be supplied to 110,000 United Kingdom homes.

Given the project's scale, it is the first proposed solar project to qualify as a a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project, meaning final approval will be given not by local planners, but by the government's Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.

Hive Energy and Wirsol Energy plan to install solar panels on 890 acres, equal to about 450 football pitches, of lowgrade farmland near the village of Graveney between Whistable and Faversham.

Grid connection, battery storage and electrical engineering support for the project would be provided by low carbon power consultants Xero Energy, while planning lawyers Pinsent Masons are leading on the DCO application and environmental specialist Arcus is set to undertake the Environmental Impact Assessment. "Our ambition is to deliver the first non-subsidised renewables project of this scale, delivering low cost, clean, home-grown energy to power United Kingdom households".
