This Madhya Pradesh Minister Has 'Not Been Able to Understand GST Yet'”

Bhopal, Nov 10 A candid confession by Madhya Pradesh minister Om Prakash Dhurve that he did not understand the Goods and Services Tax (GST) left the BJP red-faced as it argued that he is only a minister and not a chartered accountant. "Even CAs and businessmen are facing problem in understanding it", said Dhurve. The minister was making a public speech earlier this week at a party function to celebrate a year of the notes ban, his brief undoubtedly to explain how the BJP-led central government's two mega reforms, demonetisation and GST, have benefited the people.

"I have not been able to understand GST so won't speak on the issue (GST main khud nahi samajh paa raha hun to is sambandh me main nahi bolunga)", the minister said. "Gradually, people will understand and feel relaxed about the step that has been taken up by the government".

Punjab, Karnataka and Puducherry, where the Congress is in power, jointly voiced their reservations over glitches with the GST tax-filing network, demanding that real estate and petroleum products be brought under the new regime and the tax rate be kept at no more than 18%.

Reflecting on the claims of BJP leaders that the indirect tax structure was passed with Congress support, Gandhi said the present structure of GST was not what was proposed by his party.

"Bureaucratic and complex, it (GST) has devastated livelihoods, creating a modern day "Licence Raj" that imposes rigid controls and gives vast powers to government officials", Gandhi had added. "So, Dhurve ji was also right in saying that he is not able to understand it", state Congress spokesman Pankaj Chaturvedi said.
