Uber to hear ruling on appeal over employment rights”

Uber has lost its appeal on the employments rights of its drivers, the GMB union has said.

Drivers are not self-employed, but workers entitled to basic workers' rights including holiday pay, a guaranteed minimum wage and an entitlement to breaks.

Uber drivers should be classed as "workers", the Employment Appeal Tribunal has ruled, in a landmark decision that could have major ramifications for labour rights in Britain's growing "gig economy".

Since the 2016 ruling, the number of GMB member claimants in the group claim has increased to 68.

Uber appealed, arguing its drivers were self employed and were under no obligation to use its booking app. The decision of the employment tribunal will likely now be used as precedent for Uber's other drivers in the UK. "Properly rewarded drivers are the same side of the coin as drivers who are properly licensed and driving well maintained and insured vehicles".

This is not the first appeal the company has lodged in recent times.
