California NAACP Wants "Racist" Star-Spangled-Banner Removed As National Anthem

The California chapter of the NAACP passed resolutions at its state conference last month that push for the removal of The Star-Spangled Banner as the national anthem and aim to help former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick sign with another NFL team, as first reported by The Sacramento Bee.

Adolphus Pruitt, president of the St. Louis City NAACP chapter, believes the California branch is pushing for this to get people talking. "In order to move forward, we got to look back, but we also got to go, 'OK, where do we want to go from here, ' and I feel that the discussion is up for debate for sure, a civil debate if we can have that", said Burbank resident Nick Murphy.

She was disturbed by what she found: "Their blood has wash'd out their foul footstep's pollution".

The group argues that some of the lyrics of the 1812 song celebrate the death of black American slaves who fought with the British in the War of 1812 to obtain freedom.

"This country is a country that has shared values, and the more we respect each other, the better off we'll be as a country", she said.

"O'er the land of the free and the home of the courageous".

"This song is wrong", Huffman told local CBS affiliate KOVR-TV. "However, when "The Star-Spangled Banner" was written it did not include us African-Americans". "It should never have been there, and just like we didn't have it until 1931, it won't kill us if it goes away".

Immediately, the proposal garnered a strong reaction.

"Our flag and national anthem unite us as Americans", Assemblyman Travis Allen, R-Huntington Beach, who is running for governor, said in a statement.

In recent years, the national anthem has become the focus of controversy as professional athletes use the song as a platform for protest at athletic events. The second resolution reportedly asks that Congress censor President Donald Trump over his comments about National Football League players, and rallies support for Colin Kaepernick who famously protested the anthem and hasn't been picked up by a team since becoming a free agent in March. "That's a total disrespect for everything we stand for". Later, he transitioned to kneeling. "It's anti-black people".

While the anthem protests have had a polarizing effect on the league throughout this season, the NFL maintains that it's crafting a solution to address the concerns of the players while not alienating the fan base. The California NAACP has argued that changing the national anthem to a song which does not marginalize any part of the American population isn't as monumental a task as some might think.
