High levels of lead found in fidget spinners

High levels of lead found in fidget spinners”

The safety group is not aware of any reported cases of kids getting lead poisoning from fidget spinners, but they urge awareness and transparency on the part of the retailers, especially when putting the items in children's toy sections, reports CBS News correspondent Anna Werner.

She then discovered the piece in the center tested positive for lead.

The watchdog group is calling on US government safety organizations to change the classification of fidget spinners so they will have to meet federal regulations for children's products.

"It's on the center, it's the part you're interacting with so it's definitely a hazard for children", Rubin said.

The US Public Interest Research Group, which produces an annual report about unsafe toys, released data on two fidget spinners sold at Target stores - the Fidget Wild Premium Spinner Brass and the Fidget Wild Premium Spinner Metal - on Thursday, saying that both gadgets contained excessive lead levels. She tests consumer products that concerned parents send to her, including hundreds of fidget spinners.

Lead poisoning can also lead to brain and nervous system conditions, stomach and kidney problems, high blood pressure and headaches in adults. Despite the fact that fidget spinners are so popular with the grade-school set that many elementary schools have banned them as a classroom distraction, the CPSC's interim leadership classifies most fidget spinners as "general use products" exempt from child toy safety standards.

"While these two products comply with all CPSC guidelines for fidget spinners, based on the concerns raised, we're removing them from our assortment", said Jenna Reck, senior communications manager at Target.

There are no lead-level prohibitions for products marked for children 12 and over. The organization argues that the two fidget spinners are marketed towards children.

The company noted that CPSC is responsible for how the toys are categorized. "Additionally, we're working closely with our vendors to ensure all of the fidget spinners carried at Target meet the CPSC's guidelines for children's products". On Target's website, the "Fidget Wild Premium Spinner Bass" is recommended for ages 14 and over, as well as, 6 and over.

According to the advocacy group, parents who have the spinners should stop using them immediately and place them in a bag out of children's reach. "We can't sit idly by while children play with these toxic toys".
