Korea navy to join exercise with 3 USA aircraft carriers”

South Korea's navy will join a four-day exercise involving three USA aircraft carriers to be held hold off the east coast of the Korean Peninsula from Saturday, the South Korean military said Friday.

The four-day military exercise will begin off the east coast of South Korea on Saturday.

They will be joined by 7 South Korean warships and a further 11 American vessels. Including the deployment of USS Ronald Reagan, a 100,000-ton nuclear powered aircraft carrier.

The country's joint chiefs of staff (JCS) announced Friday that South Korea will send seven of its warships-including two Aegis Combat System-equipped vessels, one destroyer and four frigates-to join three USA aircraft carriers deployed in the Western Pacific that will perform their first joint drill in a decade.

The exercise aims to improve the two countries' ability to carry out cooperated operations through air operations, air artillery strikes and aircraft carrier escorts.

The upcoming exercises are aimed at strengthening the South Korea-US alliance's policy of "extended deterrence" against the Kim's continued provocations.

The allies will also show off their readiness to mount a strong retaliation with overwhelming firepower in the event of an emergency, the JCS stressed.

The defense ministry, however, has ruled out the possibility of trilateral military drills with Japan.

The U.S. 7th Fleet announced the tri-carrier exercise on Wednesday, but without mentioning participation by other nations.

The last time such drills were held was during the Valiant Shield exercises in 2006 and 2007, which took place off the coast of the US territory of Guam, which hosts two USA military bases and is on the North Korean radar for a potential missile strike.

"It is a rare opportunity to train with two aircraft carriers together, and even rarer to be able to train with three", U.S. Pacific Fleet Commander Adm. Scott Swift said on Tuesday.

The carriers, already operating in the Western Pacific, will sail one by one into the waters east of Korea for the event, it added.

"It makes sense for North Korea to come to the table and make a deal that is good for the people of North Korea and for the world", Trump told media at a news conference following a summit with South Korean counterpart Moon Jae-in.
