Muslim woman yoga teacher issued fatwa in Ranchiā€

Ranchi: Security has been provided to a Muslim girl in Jharkhand who teaches Yoga, as she is facing a threat to her life from members of her own community, the police said on Tuesday.

Acclaimed yoga artist complains she has been subjected to death threats from her community for 3 years now.

Following the threats to the yoga instructor, Rafia Naaz, a police security has been provided after the instruction was given by the state chief minister Raghubar Das.

She further said that practising Yoga as a Muslim had never been an issue in her family as well as the neighbourhood.

Rafia Naaz said in a statement, "I will not be scared and will continue with what I am doing".

On the other hand, reacting over the diktat, Maulana Saif Abbas, a Shia Cleric said,"Some people have made religion a joke, what is wrong if some woman teaches Yoga? Protesting this is highly condemnable".

A resident of Doranda in Ranchi, who has been performing yoga since the age of four, Naaz became popular in her community after sharing the stage with yoga guru Ramdev, and has won many accolades and awards in this field.

While admitting that she and her family had received many threats, Naaz also expressed her gratitude to the Jharkhand government for providing her with security.

"I will continue to do yoga and teach yoga until the end of my life", she stressed. She is the eldest of her siblings and also doing M.Com from a local college.

While Naaz stays defiant, her family is anxious over the threats issued against her.
