Veterans deserve our honor and respect

Veterans deserve our honor and respect”

Veterans Day originated as "Armistice Day" on November 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and November 11 became a national holiday to honor veterans in 1938. More than 13 million reported for duty.

Michael Mullen, a former United States Navy admiral who served as the 17th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said, "If you listen closely to the voices of our veterans, you understand that yes, they all returned from war changed, but what never changed is this: They never forgot your generosity".

World War I ushered in the modern era of warfare - machine guns, tanks, airplanes, long-range artillery, submarines, chemical warfare and other deadly weapons. The public ceremony will include guest speaker John McManus, professor of US military history at Missouri University of Science and Technology and award-winning author of military history books including "Deadly Sky" and "September Hope", as well as music from the sixth- and seventh-grade choirs at Green Middle School.

If those hostilities escalate into wars, there will be many more veterans in our future - and we hope they receive better treatment from the federal government than recent veterans have received.

In 1921, Arlington National Cemetery became the focal point of reverence for America's veterans when an unknown World War I American Soldier was buried there. Soon, everyone knew that World War I would not be the war to end all wars. And Japan surrendered in August of that year. But we can not argue with the commitment of these men and women fulfilling their duty with every breath they take.

On Saturday, McDowell County residents - both here at home and in New York City - will pay tribute to those who have worn the uniform in service to our country.

In November 1919, then President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Nov. 11 as the first official celebration of Armistice Day.

The nation observes America's 96th Veterans Day tomorrow.

"It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press".

The United States entered the fighting in Europe in 1917.

My father, Elmer Johnson, quit high school at 17 after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and joined the Army Air Corps for the duration of World War II.

Those details note the war officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, in the Palace of Versailles outside the town of Versailles, France. The war on terror has now lasted for the past 16 years. "We all share a responsibility to ensure that our veterans are empowered for success as civilians, just as they were successful members of the Armed Forces". If you can not take part in one of the many ceremonies scheduled locally and across the country, I encourage you to take at least a few moments to recognize the countless sacrifices that paved the way for the freedom we enjoy today.

Bryan Wood, a combat veteran and author of the book "Unspoken Abandonment", speaks openly about how hard it is for veterans to return home while their mind still functions as if it's facing the danger of a war zone.
