Britain blanketed by first real snow of the season

Britain blanketed by first real snow of the season”

Colder weather and snow is set to last longer this year due to the La Nina weather phenomenon, which last hit the United Kingdom in 2010, when much of the country was covered with heavy snowfall.

"Around the middle of the month, ex-tropical Hurricane Ophelia dragged warm air northwards across the United Kingdom, resulting in maximum temperatures in the low 20Cs across eastern counties of England (23.5C in Manston, Kent, on 16 October) as well as hurricane-force winds", a Met Office blogpost said.

Temperatures dropped as low as minus 3C (26.6F) across large swathes of the United Kingdom last night - but it was not the chilliest night of the autumn so far.

And we can also expect snow within the three weeks, The Weather Outlook says, across both the north and southern areas of the UK.

A MET Office forecaster told The Sun: "The cold winds coming straight from the Arctic will carry with them a few showers and will be cold enough to fall as sleet or snow over some northern hills".

Early risers braved snow-covered hills in the Pennines, Cumbria, this morning, with reports of the white stuff settling in the Cairngorms in Scotland and Snowdonia in Wales.

'Low levels could see flurries in northern Scotland.

Much of Britain woke to a clear, but freezing start to Monday with a widespread frost. Temperatures have been down below freezing but for most that cold north wind has eased off, thankfully.

The Met Office said the run up to Christmas will see temperatures below normal, with an increased risk of snow, especially in the North.

"Minimum temperatures could exceed the coldest temperatures of the season".

AccuWeather senior meteorologist, Alan Reppert, added: "There is better than usual potential for -15C temperatures on some of the coldest days this winter".
