R100‚000 fine for Manana plus community service and compensation for victims

R100‚000 fine for Manana plus community service and compensation for victims”

Members of the EFF clash with a members of the ANC after an ANC member provoked the group outside the Randburg Magistrate's court in Johannesburg after the Magistrate ordered that former Deputy Higher Education Minister Mduduzi Manana is fined R100 000 and to pay R5000 and R20000 to his victims and does 500 hours community service.

Manana had been convicted of three counts of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm after pleading guilty to the charges.

He and two friends assaulted three women - Noluthando Mahlaba, Monoisa Duma and Thina Mapipa - at the Cubana nightclub in Johannesburg's Fourways in August after an argument where one of them called him "stabane", a homophobic slur.

He is also ordered to perform 500 hours of community service‚ and to report at 8am for his rehabilitation programme‚ which commences on Tuesday.

In passing the sentence, Magistrate Ramsamy Reddy lambasted Manana saying the degree of violence displayed by Manana in a public space was not becoming of a person of his stature. She said Manana can easily fork out a fine of R100,000. In addition‚ he was declared unfit to possess a firearm. Reddy noted that despite the severity of Manana's actions, which had taken place during Women's Month, Manana had proven himself to be a "constructive citizen of society", because he had taken responsibility for his actions by enrolling in counselling sessions to deal with his anger. He pleaded guilty to all charges on 7 September.

Magistrate Reddy says he considered Manana's display of remorse during sentencing.

Mduduzi Manana, 33, quit his job in August as deputy minister for higher education after he was charged over the assault, which was caught on camera and circulated widely on social media.

Manana still holds his position as ANC member of parliament.

Manana's supporters wearing African National Congress T-shirts broke out in song outside the court following his sentencing.
