Apple Watch Series 3 propels company back into wearables lead

Apple Watch Series 3 propels company back into wearables lead”

Tim Cook noted that "With unit growth of over 50% for the third consecutive quarter, it continues to be the best selling and most loved smartwatch in the world. The ability to go for a run with just your Apple Watch or go for a quick errand without your phone while staying connected is a game changer". Apple is now covering 23% of the market share pushing the Chinese company, that was slightly top of the industry for the first time in the previous quarter, Xiaomi to the second place for 21% market share.

One of the reasons for the Apple Watch doing well in the quarter is the boost received with the launch of the Apple Watch Series 3 in September.

The analyst noted that even with the strong shipments, the Apple Watch Series 3 hasn't reached its full potential thanks to limited availability with demand outstripping supply in certain big markets around the globe.

Apple sold 3.9 million units in Q3, buoyed by a product refresh which saw Series 3 introduced, which included an LTE model for the first time.

According to new report published by Canalys, Apple became the largest manufacturer of wearable devices after the release of its Apple Watch in September 2017. Basically, Canalys believes carriers massively underestimated the demand for the cellular Apple Watch. "Besides bringing in more stock, operators should work on improving their remote service provisioning systems to cater for the expected higher demand in Q4", says Low.

Smartphone makers Huawei and Samsung also make their own series of smartwatches, some of which are created to rival the Apple Watch, but have had to contend with 6% and 5% share, respectively. Looking out to the current fourth quarter, the research firm said vendors are expecting a strong three month period with new smartwatches including improved health tracking features and a longer battery life driving demand. "Otherwise, the market will see further consolidation, as vendors such as Apple, Samsung and Fitbit dominate with their watch software platforms", adds Low. But Canalys reported the top vendors were all up in the previous quarter. Those using abusive language or negative behavior will result in being blacklisted on Disqus.
