Britain considers diplomatic immunity for jailed aid worker in Iran”

Charity worker Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, wife of Farnham's Richard Ratcliffe, has been held in Tehran since her arrest by Iran's Revolutionary Guard in April 2016.

During the session, Boris Johnson also apologised for previously telling a Commons committee that she was training journalists, a move which appeared to risk seeing her jail sentence being doubled.

Johnson said on November 1 that she had been teaching people journalism before her arrest in April 2016, contradicting her and her employer, who said she had been on holiday visiting her family.

"I reject any suggestion that she was there in a professional capacity", he said. Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn meanwhile had called for Boris Johnson to be sacked over the misleading statements.

"I apologize for the distress and anguish caused to Ms. Zaghari-Ratcliffe and her family".

The conservative representative for Tonbridge and Malling spoke after Mr Johnson restated the Government's plea that Iranian authorities release Mrs Zaghari-Ratcliffe on humanitarian grounds.

This led United Nations human rights experts to express "grave" concerns for her welfare, calling on the Iranian authorities to release her at once.

Why is Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe in jail?

Johnson said earlier this month that he will travel to Iran in the coming weeks and discuss all consular issues there.

It remains unclear, however, if or when Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe will be released from prison for sure, having completed less than a year of her official five-year term so far.
