Inmate will get pillow to help him breathe during execution

Inmate will get pillow to help him breathe during execution”

If the execution happens, Campbell would be the third inmate to be executed in the state this year.

Earlier this month Campbell (left) lost a bid to be executed by firing squad after a federal judge questioned whether lawmakers would enact the bill needed to allow the method.

Convicted murderer Alva Campbell, 69, is scheduled to die on Wednesday for fatally shooting teenager Charles Dials during a 1997 carjacking while fleeing from police. The slaying came five years after he was paroled on a different murder charge.

"At this time, (the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction) intends to use a wedge-shaped pillow on the gurney at Mr. Campbell's execution", JoEllen Smith told the Columbus Dispatch.

On Tuesday, the state said it was starting final preparations for Campbell's execution.

The prisons agency says Dials' uncle will also witness the execution.

Campbell's last meal, called a special meal in OH, includes pork chops, greens, sweet potato pie, mashed potatoes and gravy and macaroni and cheese.

According to the Dispatch, Campbell has pulmonary problems and it is hard for him to lie flat without choking.

The state says a condemned inmate with multiple health problems has arrived at the OH death house a day ahead of his scheduled execution.

Campbell is set to die Wednesday morning for killing a teenager during a Columbus carjacking two decades ago.

A prison department spokeswoman said in a statement on Monday that officials will provide Campbell with a wedge-shaped pillow to help make his breathing easier.

The Dispatch reported, citing court records, that Campbell uses a walker, relies on an external colostomy bag and requires four breathing treatments a day.

Campbell has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to stop his execution, saying he's too ill to execute.

The state's prisons system plans to give the pillow to death row inmate Alva Campbell on Wednesday (15 November) for breathing issues he may experience while lying flat, Fox8 Cleveland reported.

A prisons doctor in OH recommended it after the 69-year-old became agitated when lying on his back during an exam last month.
