Jordan connects 12.9MW PV project in refugee camp

Jordan connects 12.9MW PV project in refugee camp”

The world's largest solar plant found in a refugee camp has begun operations at the Za'atari Refugee Camp in north Jordan, near the Syrian border.

The UNHCR has previously been providing eight hours of electricity a day, costing $500,000 (P25.6 million) a month, said Stefano Severe, the agency's representative in Jordan.

Jordan has officially switched on the largest PV project ever to be developed in a refugee camp, with Reuters reporting that the 12.9MW project will provide renewable energy to almost 80,000 Syrians.

The project is part of Jordan's efforts to increase reliance on renewable energy, said the agency, adding it will save around 5.5 million USA dollars which can be re-invested in support for refugees.

In May, a solar power plant of 2 MW was put online in Jordan's Azraq refugee camp, bringing power to about 20,000 Syrian refugees living in shelters there.

"Electricity is very important to us, it is needed by men, children, women, everyone needs it during the day", Syrian refugee Anwar Hussein told Reuters TV. With this power comes greater security for the residents of the camp. The newly available solar energy at Za'atari will be used by more than 80,000 residents to charge phones, contact families outside of the camp, and power refrigeration, lights, fans and televisions.

The agency said the plant will allow the UNHCR to provide more hours of electricity to refugees' homes.

Yet while access to clean energy for refugees and their host communities is a global priority for UNHCR, analysts say millions of displaced people still lack access to sustainable, cheap energy sources because of a lack of funding.

Although Za'atari may boast the world's largest solar plant at a refugee camp, it is certainly not a unique feature.
