Korea, UN member nations promise peaceful 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics”

The measure calls for a temporary halt to conflicts around the worldA resolution calling for a temporary halt to conflicts around the world during the Winter Olympics next year in Pyeongchang is to be adopted on November 13 by the UN General Assembly in NY.

It went on to request "the Secretary-General to promote the observance of the Olympic Truce among Member States and support for human development initiatives through sport, and to cooperate with the International Olympic Committee in the realisation of these objectives". In our fragile world, the Olympic Games always build bridges. Adopted by consensus on Monday, the resolution "Building a peaceful and better world through sport and the Olympic Ideal" urges countries to "ensure the safe passage, access and participation of athletes, officials and all other accredited persons taking part in the Olympic Winter Games and Paralympic Winter Games". This specific call is especially important, given the time and place of these Olympic Winter Games.

Following the adoption of the resolution, International Olympic Committee (ICO) President Thomas Bach spoke of the "special significance" the resolution will carry for the athletes in PyeongChang.

"With the Olympic Truce resolution, the United Nation General Assembly is creating the conditions for all athletes to compete in peace", Bach said in a statement released by the IOC.

In his words, "Only the United Nations member states can guarantee the athletes the safe passage to the Olympic Games".

"It was at this General Assembly last September that South Korea President Moon Jae-in expressed his commitment to achieving peace on the Korean Peninsula".

Beginning seven days before the Olympic Games got under way and ending seven days after them, the Truce allowed athletes, artists, their families and ordinary pilgrims to travel in total safety in order to participate in or attend the Games and to then return home afterwards. This is an ideal based on humanity.

The Organising Committees for the Olympic Games (OCOGs) all contribute fully to promoting these themes, while the IOC's undertakings for the Olympic Truce extend beyond the period of the Olympic Games and have led to the implementation of a series of "sport for peace" activities through its more than 200 National Olympic Committees.

The South Korean delegation, which includes Seoul's Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Do Jong-hwan, and figure-skating gold medalist Kim Yuna, will join a number of promotional activities in NY for the PyeongChang Winter Olympics through Tuesday. Lee Hee-beom, President of POCOG, introduced it to the General Assembly.

The Greek Olympic Truce tradition dates back to the eighth century BC, and has since served as a sacred principle of the Olympic Games.

"They called for the United Nations to support the resolution, entitled "'Building a Peaceful and Better World through Sports and the Olympic Idea". The resolution reaffirms that the Olympic values of peace, solidarity and respect are as important across the world today as they were over 3,000 years ago, when the ancient Olympic Games first took place in Greece.

The 2017 Winter Games are scheduled to take place February 9 to February 25.
