Nintendo and Universal in talks for animated Mario Bros. movie

Nintendo is in talks to bring Mario back to Hollywood, according to a report today by the Wall Street Journal.

Mario may be headed to the big screen once again.

Two decades on from Nintendo's last attempt, it looks like there's going to be a new Super Mario Bros. movie.

The outlet also reveals that this potential deal would allow the studio to make multiple films in the franchise, however, only one is now planned. Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of the legendary franchise, would board as a producer.

Nintendo and Universal have an existing relationship that will see theme parks based on the video game giant's renowned properties opened in Universal Studios' locations in Japan, Florida and California.

This time around it'll be an animated film, from Minions and Shrek studio Universal Animation.

Characters from what may be history's best-selling videogame franchise have been salivated over by big studios, but Nintendo backed off almost all licensing deals after a disastrous live-action production of Super Mario Brothers in 1993.
