Taking your time over meals cuts danger of heart disease

Taking your time over meals cuts danger of heart disease”

The participants, who were all healthy at that point, were asked to describe their usual eating speed as slow, normal or fast and divided into these three groups.

You're said to have metabolic syndrome if you have at least three out of these five factors: excess fat around your midsection, high blood pressure, high blood triglycerides (blood fat), low HDL "good" cholesterol, and high blood sugar.

Lead researcher Dr Takayuki Yamaji, a cardiologist from Hiroshima University in Japan, said: "Eating more slowly may be a crucial lifestyle change to help prevent metabolic syndrome".

The study was conducted on more than 1,000 middle-aged people in Japan with an average age of 51.

Research by Japanese scientists has found that people who eat slowly and mindfully are less likely to pile on the pounds or develop metabolic syndrome - the name for a cluster of unsafe health problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity which can damage the heart.

Professor Jeremy Pearson, Associate Medical Director at the British Heart Foundation told The Telegraph: "If anything, it's a reminder that many of us have hectic lifestyles which may include eating quickly at the desk over lunchtime, or in a rush commuting home".

Researchers from the organization presented their findings about eating pace and health at the 2017 Scientific Sessions, a conference where researchers and clinicians discuss the newest heart health advances.

"When people eat fast they tend not to feel full and are more likely to overeat", Yamaji speculated.

In contrast, the likelihood for slow eaters was just 2.3 per cent. The team determined that eating quickly was linked to being heavier, having more stomach fat and having higher blood glucose. Gobbling through your meals can increase your risk of weight gain, heart disease and diabetes.

Experts warn those who wolf down their meals fail to realise they are full and tend to overeat.

They found fast eaters were associated with greater weight gain, higher blood sugar levels and a larger waistline.

Still, when it comes to chowing down, this is the one area it seems to pay to be slow.
