World Diabetes Day 2017 to focus on "Women and diabetes"

World Diabetes Day 2017 to focus on

Up to 70 percent of cases of type 2 diabetes could be prevented through the adoption of a healthy lifestyle.

Furthermore, the Health ministry provides the necessary care and availability of free drugs in primary health care facilities to 748,000 diabetics, of whom 64% are women, and mobilizes an annual budget of around 156,700,000 dirhams for the purchase of insulin and oral antidiabetic drugs, as well as 15 million dirhams for the acquisition of medical-technical equipment and reagents for the screening of diabetes and the metabolic monitoring of diabetics, the statement said.

Type 1 diabetes (previously known as insulin-dependent or childhood-onset diabetes) is characterised by a lack of insulin production. Unless measures are taken to address the problem, it is estimated that by 2040 there will be over 100 million adults with diabetes, with adverse effects on quality of life that include heart attack, stroke, blindness, renal failure, and amputation of lower limbs.

In many countries, women are disproportionately affected by obesity. Accordingly, "Women and Diabetes-Our Right to a Healthy Future" is the theme of World Diabetes Day 2017, to be held on 14 November, promoted by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF). These limitations expose women to the main risk factors of diabetes, including poor diet and nutrition, physical inactivity, tobacco consumption and harmful use of alcohol.

A significant number of women with GDM also go on to develop type 2 diabetes within five to 10 years of delivering their child, further adding to healthcare complications and costs. Obesity and diabetes in mothers have also been linked with a greater likelihood of their children contracting diabetes in youth.

Dr Khor told The Straits Times yesterday at an event marking World Diabetes Day, which falls on Tuesday: "Increasingly, we can see that a lot more people are aware". It often results from excess body weight and physical inactivity.

Around one-fifth were found to be at higher risk.

Most people with diabetes - nine out of 10-have type 2 diabetes.

Regular physical activity means getting at least 150 minutes a week of brisk walking or a similar activity. All women with diabetes should have access to pre-conception planning services to reduce risk during pregnancy.
