Australians vote in favor of same-sex marriage

Australians vote in favor of same-sex marriage”

In September, the Australian government chose to hold a non-binding, non-compulsory postal survey on whether the law should be changed to allow same-sex couples to marry.

Almost 80 percent of eligible voters took part in the poll, said the chief of the statistics bureau Davis Kalisch, adding: "Australians can have confidence these statistics reflect the view of the eligible population".

The Senate will be asked later today to support a move to introduce draft laws allowing same-sex marriage on Thursday.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, a moderate conservative who supported legalisation, called the "yes" vote an "overwhelming" endorsement of marriage equality.

Mr Turnbull, a same-sex marriage supporter, is facing debate within his government over what the parliamentary bill should include.

"The simple message now is: pass the law", said Tiernan Brady, leader of the Marriage Equality campaign.

On Tuesday Turnbull said the government "would not countenance" legalising discrimination against same-sex weddings by commercial service providers and warned a rival conservative bill to do so would have "virtually no prospect" of passing parliament. It is fair. The people have voted yes for marriage equality.

"If the Australian people do vote yes, they're not going to look kindly on the same group of people who have urged a "no" vote not accepting the outcome and trying to delay further", she said.

Results will be released this Wednesday the 15th in Canberra at 10am (AEDT) and aired live on ABC and SBS.

The competing bills are causing a schism within the coalition, with Treasurer Scott Morrison, who opposes same-sex marriage, saying in a radio interview on Wednesday that Smith's legislation doesn't contain sufficient protections for religious freedoms.

"We do not want a dictatorship of the majority in this country".

Labor Senator Penny Wong says if the same-sex marriage survey returns a No result, then Labor would aim to legislate for marriage equality.

Liberal Senator Dean Smith has said he will introduce a bill to parliament this week to legalize same-sex marriage. "We would have to pick ourselves up".
